The search for the best children’s books for Storytime 2015

  

Are you the next best children’s author or illustrator? Or have you written one of the most exciting children’s books for 2015, one that is great for a story hour? We want to read and recognize your book with our “StoryTime Jam!  This Book Rocks” Awards, distinguishing books that captivate a child’s imagination during “StoryTime.” StoryTime By Design, Inc, (www.storytimebydesign.com) the home of the musical, magical story hour,  is  a children’s entertainment, licensing and publishing company that specializes in creating musical story hours for children.  We also are a premiere gift site specializing in selling hand picked classic children’s books, modern book boxes and specialty items that promote literacy.


Our search for the best new children’s books for 2014 was very successful. We launched some exciting careers and are so thrilled to have discovered some very talented children’s authors.  This is


 With the success of our “Mommy and Me” musical story hours and over 150 story hours tested by children and their parents, we know what book makes a great “StoryTime” and can identify unique stories that children and families love. We have created our “StoryTime Jam—This Book Rocks” Awards to help parents identify the most outstanding  children’s books that educate, stimulate and captivate a child’s mind.  This contest also provides a needed service to children's authors and illustrator's who are looking for a fresh and exciting way to promote, publicize and sell their books. Book winners will receive our special Seal of approval and distinction that can be placed on their books, website and promotional packaging.  First place “Winners” as well as “Finalists” will be promoted on our website and announced to the media through our press release when winners and finalists are announced at press time.

 

Rules for Submission:


  1. a) Submit up to three titles for a particular category.  Application fee is $125.00 per title. Categories include: Best Picture Book; Best Board Book, Best Rhythmic Book, Best Fairytale, Best Illustration, and Best Concept Book. Please note, you can submit a title in several categories. Submissions begin January 31, 2015-June 15, 2015. Winners will be notified at press time in July 2015.

  2. b)Age range-6 months to 8 years old only. Please do not submit young adult books.

  3. c)Please send a copy of your book to StoryTime By Design, Inc. Attention Karen Levine, 170 East 87th Street #6A East, NY, NY 10128. Please note that copies will not be returned and that all books must have an  ISBN number before review.

  4. d)Application fee’s can be submitted by credit card or check. Books will only be reviewed once application fee is received and processed.  Please send checks and or money order to Karen Levine, 170 East 87th Street #6A East, NY, NY 10128.  Credit cards can be accepted online via paypal.

  5. e)All entries will be notified by email when we have received your application, application fee and book for review.

  6. f)All books will be reviewed by STBD, Inc. owners and specific members of our review board.

  7. g)All winners will be announced to press on July 15. 2015.  Announcements will then be sent to appropriate media and announced on our website.

  8. h)Membership of any children's groups or organizations are not a requirement to submit your work.

  9. i)If you wish, you may attach a cover letter with your contact information to your final work.

  10. j)The StoryTime By Design, Inc office is only requesting for one copy to be sent to its office which will be shared with committee chairs. Standards are in place for the committee members to review and share submissions. If you are submitting for multiple awards, only one copy needs to be sent to the STBD, Inc. office.


What Do We Look For?

1.In identifying a book that will excite children during a story hour, we look for the following:

a.Unique and Inspiring characters

b.Imaginative Illustrations that help interpret the story, theme, or concept;

c.Rhythm and poetic writing that help children project outcomes of the story plot, theme, characters, setting, mood or information through the pictures.

d.Does this book appeal to a group of children or is it best read one on one?

  2. We appreciate E-books. The book must be available in hard or soft copy as well. 


Terms


1."StoryTime Jam! This Book Rocks" Awards shall be awarded annually to children's authors and illustrators who have demonstrated original work that will excite children during a story hour. Finalists will also be acknowledged!

2.The award is restricted to children's authors and illustrators who are citizens or residents of the United States.  Books published in a U.S. territory or U.S. commonwealth are eligible.


Definitions

  1. 1.Picture Books: These stories concentrate more on the illustrations than on the written component. The words of the story compliments the artwork rather than the pictures adding to the story.

  2. 2.Rhythmic Books: These books usually rhyme or have a musical component. This genre also includes nursery rhymes and lullabies.

  3. 3.Fairytales: Princes fighting for princesses dominate this genre. These stories have a magical component and are a more detailed way of explaining the world.

  4. 4.Board Books: These are books where children are introduced to stories even before they are born.  Books have a tactile feeling made out of board, cloth and plastic all make up this category, and their stories introduce babies to the basic outline of our world.  The babies love to touch, feel and share in the adventure of discovering something new.

  5. 5.Concept Books: Concepts ranging from counting to brushing teeth to sharing are covered in these stories. 

  6. 6.The term "original work" may have several meanings.  For purposes of our "StoryTime Jam! This Book Rocks" Awards, it is defined as copy and illustrations that were created by the author and or illustrator and no one else.

  7. 7.For our purposes, “Children's book in the United States” means books published in a U.S. territory or U.S. commonwealth are eligible.

  8. 8.“In English” means that we will consider only books written and published in English. This requirement DOES NOT limit the use of words or phrases in another language where appropriate in context.

  9. 9.“Published in 2015” means that the book is available in 2015. But, it could have been written in prior years.

  10. 10.“Resident” specifies that author has established and maintains a residence in the United States, U.S. territory, or U.S. commonwealth.  Canada is also a territory we are accepting applications.

  11. 11.The STBD, Inc. office cannot answer eligibility questions or advise on which award your submission is eligible for. It is up to you to review the terms and criteria and if you feel you qualify, submit as appropriate. Eligibility is determined by the committee and is confidential.

Submissions begin January 1, 2015. Deadline for submitting books is June 15, 2015.
